Mind + Body
I was always drawn to integrative health throughout my childhood in Japan, Australia, and the United States. Experiencing different cultures at a young age – particularly how they viewed wellness – certainly had an impression on me.
It wasn’t until college that I considered mind and body wellness a passion that I could pursue professionally. In my undergraduate days, I enjoyed working in integrative health research, which opened my eyes to how working with in this space can shift the way we think about health—not only for ourselves, but also, the planet.
A sustainable wedding day
I’m getting married in September and have made sustainability a priority for our special weekend.
We’re are getting married in Baltimore, Maryland. It is where my fiancé, Jack, is from and where most of his family resides. My entire family is also on the east coast, so it’s easier for everyone to attend and lessons the carbon footprint that our event will have.
I’m proud to be wearing designers that only work with suppliers and partners who are cruelty-free and socially responsible. While I have yet to reveal the designers I’m wearing, my reception dress is recycled and second-hand! I also plan on giving my outfits to a bride in need.
While we’re still deciding many aspects of our wedding, we will be recycling all of our florals and paper products and working with local charities to find the best fit for some of these initiatives.
Clean beauty tips
When starting to make the transition to cleaner personal care products, I find it easiest to avoid certain ingredients. My big no-nos are: BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole, parabens, PEG (polyethylene glycol), Cocamide DEAL, ceteareth glycol, triclosan, mineral oil, quaternium-15, and fragrance. These ingredients have been associated with alarming health concerns related to neurotoxicity, hormone disruption, immunotoxicity, and more. Not to mention some of them are even restricted in the European Union, Japan, and Canada.
When shopping for products, look for brands that are transparent about their sourcing and labeling. I often look for all-natural nourishing botanicals that have proven therapeutic properties, like rosehip seed, mango butter, jojoba oil, among others.
