Amber Heard Fashion: Her Best-Documented Red Carpet Looks
Amber Heard’s red carpet record is shorter and more specific than the endless “style icon” lists suggest, but the looks that are well documented share a clear point of view: saturated colour, strong necklines and old-Hollywood hair. Her years as a global spokesperson for L’Oréal Paris put her on some of fashion’s biggest stages, from the Croisette in Cannes to a runway at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Red at the 2018 Met Gala
The 2018 Costume Institute Gala took as its theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, and Heard answered it with one of the more considered looks of the night. She wore a red Carolina Herrera gown with long sleeves and a high turtleneck, modest from the front, with a daringly open back.
The colour did the thematic work. Red runs through Catholic iconography, from martyrs’ blood to cardinals’ robes, and a plain, covered-up silhouette let that reference land without costume-party literalism. The finishing touch was a gold halo headpiece by the independent label Apatico, made from hand-painted plastic zip ties arranged to radiate like rays of light. It was an inexpensive piece, and its success on a night of haute couture is a useful reminder that a strong idea matters more than a price tag.
Cannes and the L’Oréal Paris years
Heard attended the Cannes Film Festival as a L’Oréal Paris ambassador in the late 2010s, and those appearances produced her most photographed gowns. In 2018, the year the brand named her a global spokesperson, she wore a floral Valentino couture gown with an extreme neckline to a premiere on the festival’s red carpet.
She was candid with WWD that year about her approach, saying she had “never been known for being safe” and that she went into fittings without fixed goals. She also explained her fondness for volume with a line from home: “I am from Texas, you know the saying: ‘The bigger the hair, the closer to God.'” Big, brushed-out waves and a defined lip became the constants that tied her Cannes looks together, whatever the dress.
Off the carpet in Cannes, WWD reported her in a black vintage T-shirt and Saint Laurent jeans, which is close to the uniform of that era: one good pair of dark jeans, a worn-in tee and very little else.

Elie Saab at Paris Fashion Week
In October 2021 Heard walked in Le Défilé L’Oréal Paris, the brand’s open-air show at the foot of the Eiffel Tower during Paris Fashion Week, alongside fellow ambassadors including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Camila Cabello. She wore a pastel pink Elie Saab jumpsuit from the house’s Fall 2021 ready-to-wear collection, with a plunging neckline, split sleeves and dramatic feathers at the shoulders.
A jumpsuit on a runway built for evening wear was a smart choice. It carried the romance of the feathers and the soft colour while reading as modern and easy to move in, which is exactly what a walking show demands.
What her red carpet style gets right
Looking across these appearances, a few principles stand out that translate well beyond a red carpet:
- Pick one statement. The Met Gala look put the drama in the colour and the open back, and kept the front clean. The Valentino gown put it in the neckline and the print.
- Let colour carry meaning. A single saturated shade, such as red or blush pink, photographs better than several competing ones and can reference a theme without props.
- Keep hair and make-up consistent. Voluminous waves and a strong lip gave her looks a recognisable signature even as designers changed.
- Mix price points. A modestly priced accessory worn with confidence can hold its own next to couture.
Classic foundations, modern edges
The “classic and contemporary” description fits Heard’s best-documented looks well. The silhouettes she chose, from a column with long sleeves to a full couture gown, belong to a long evening-wear tradition, while the details (a bare back, a zip-tie halo, a feathered jumpsuit in place of a gown) kept them current. For anyone borrowing from her approach, that balance is the lesson: start with a shape that has stood the test of time, then change one element to make it your own.
