Celebrity Kids and Skateboarding Trend or Lifestyle?
Image There is some kind of image that is constantly appearing on celebrity Instagram feeds and paparazzi photos of late. A well known person is seen stepping out of a coffee shop or a school pickup and behind him or her is a child with his or her skateboard strapped under his or her arm. It is becoming so frequent nowadays that one would wonder whether those children are getting very serious on skating or the board is merely a very eye catching accessory.
This is most likely a yes and no question, depending on who you are speaking to.
The Ones Who Actually Skate
That is reflected by some celebrity kids who have been brought up in skateboarding families. The children of Lil Wayne also watched their father legitimately spending time in the skatepark and the culture was naturally transferred. Travis Barker, whose whole aesthetic is deeply tied to skate and punk, has been open about his kids being around boards from early on. These are not children who were given a set up to take a picture. Skating became a daily routine to them.
Then there are those children who found it on their own parameters. We have seen plenty of celebrity kids in our skateparks due to their friends, or because someone on YouTube skated and they liked it or wanted to do it. That is the only way in which most non-famous children get into it. The skating entry route does not really differ on discovering the parentage.
For those kids, the gear matters in the way it matters to any young skater finding their identity in the sport. They want cool skateboard designs that feel like their own, not something picked out by a stylist or bought in bulk for a brand deal. That distinction between chosen and assigned is something skate culture notices immediately.
The Aesthetic Angle
It is not innocent to assume that the visual identity of skateboarding does not contribute to the attractiveness to certain families. Now the skate style has been fully assimilated into the mainstream fashion so that it is nearly impossible to distinguish between a skater and someone who dresses the part as skateboarders do. Loose jeans, battered footwear, baggy hoodies, a board leaning on the wall – it looks cool in a manner that is extremely difficult to replicate.
In the case of a celebrity parent(s) that have created a certain image, it is no wonder that their children will continue that visual language. The fact that the kid can actually ollie or not is a bit less important in such instances. Regardless, we are doing cultural work by board.
What the Bigger Picture Shows
The interesting fact is that this youth wave of celeb skateboarders is coinciding with the fact that skating is suffering a huge legitimacy change at all levels. The 2024 Olympic Games held in Paris had some of the youngest among competitors in the history of the Games in any event. ABC News stated that children as young as 12 participated and competed on their own level and skaters such as Sky Brown who got the Olympic medal at the age of 13, became the youngest skater in Britain, returning to compete again in Paris. The sport is producing elite athletes at ages that would have been unthinkable in previous generations.
That trajectory filters down into how kids and parents perceive skating. It’s not a risky hobby to steer kids away from. It’s an Olympic sport with visible young role models and a clear development pathway if a kid gets serious about it.
Trend or Lifestyle
The truth is that they are both and two things are not exclusive. With the use of some celebrity children, skating will become so much a part of them. Others will have had a change by the time they are fourteen and the board will be in a garage of some sort.
It is but the fact, that those who persevere in it, generally came there through the influence of one who stood in the vicinity of them, and taught skating a thing, a thing of reality, not a piece of show business, nor a stage towards anything, but a thing that will be duly taken, and that which should be duly taken. The parents of celebrities who have been brought up in skate culture are likely to give birth to skate kids. Parents of celebrities who purchased a board to the child as the decorative choice are likely to bring up a child that would post about the skating sessions a few months and cease.
The distinction of the boards is aware, although the photos do not cause it to appear.
