Becoming an artist
I was born into a family of artists. My mother always had ideas that creatively nourished our minds: when we were children, we had a family home in Vermont, where there were not many kids with whom to play, so my brother and I had to make our own fun. Art was the answer to that!
Whether it was creating moss gardens on the rocks, drawing on an old pad with crayons, or making doll-like soft sculptures…we were always busy! Years later, that creativity has translated into the work I do now: I am always finding ways to create things, whether it be painting, steel sculptures, weaving branches from the trees in our forest into a large nest-like fence, etc.
I believe that I was always an artist on some level, and that creativity was something that my mother nurtured in me as a child. As such, I believe I was always an artist.
I’m inspired by my day-to-day. I paint what is around me, and I paint how it makes me feel. Color is a leading factor in my work, and it is what makes me want to put paint down on a substrate, in the first place. Once I know which colours I’m using, the rest is simply a matter of what I feel like doing that day: the composition, the tools I will use, the forms, textures. I have several different styles, and I switch out between them. This keeps it fresh, and keeps me inspired.
I used to be a scuba diver in the Caribbean. The underwater world is forever imprinted on my brain: the patterns, the colors, the shapes. If one knows this about me, then my work makes more sense.
Lastly, I’m also very inspired by the work of many artists who came before me. Specifically, I love the work of women artists such as Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Emily Mason, Lee Krasner, and Yayoi Kusama.
Amour Vert x Claire Desjardins collection
The inspiration behind the paintings I created for Amour Vert was California.
The California series is one that I have been contemplating for some time. I have spent more time on the West Coast in recent years, than I ever had before. I love the large, wide open spaces, the cliffs, the ocean and the beaches.
My series was also inspired by the work of the late Robert Motherwell.
