Taylor Swift has now been with NFL tight end Travis Kelce for so long that people are forgetting how they met. Even when they announced their engagement at the back end of 2025, the origins of their relationship were presented in fuzzy, inexact matters.

And hey, that is fair! Swift and Kelce are among the more unique celebrity couples after all. See, when we think of famous people getting together, we often immediately gravitate toward household names that run in the same orbit. A couple of weeks after, on July 26, Kelce mentioned on his podcast that he was “disappointed” he didn’t get to meet Swift before or after the show, so that he could give her a friendship bracelet.

Less than two months later, reports started surfacing that the two were hanging out. Hence the belief that podcast was the moment in which Kelce shot-his-shot with the pop legend.

This isn’t entirely untrue. This sequence of events no doubt played a major role in getting the couple together. And yet, the bread crumbs for a face-to-face encounter were actually laid on a separate, earlier podcast.

Kelce’s Courtship of Swift Began on an Earlier Podcast

Rewind the clock to July 4, 2023. While filming a video for NFL Canada, Kelce put together friendship bracelets for participants at Tight End University, a summit hosted by Kelce himself alongside fellow NFL TEs George Kittle and George Kittle that aims to bring the best tight ends in the league together to bond, according to ESPN.

Anyway, during the video in question, Kelce said he was taking “a page out of Taylor Swift’s book” when making the friendship bracelets. This moment, in turn, spawned his July 26 podcast comments about wanting to give her one.

Now, you might be asking: Where’s the proof this is how Kelce got on Swift’s radar? That’s a fair question. And it is one with an unassailable answer.

Taylor Swift is the proof herself.

Consider what she said in a December 2023 interview with TIME’s Sam Lansky upon being named the magazine’s Person of the Year:

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell. We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other. By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple. I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to launch a first date.”

What better source for confirmation of how Tay Tay started than one-half of the couple itself? On top of all that, Swift also dispelled yet another common misconception.

Taylor Swift attended her first Kansas Chiefs game to watch Kelce on September 24, 2023. As the eventual Super Bowl champions went on to beat the Chicago Bears, many across social media wondered whether this was their first time going out in public—not the first time they met, but their first actual date.

The story took on a life of its own. That makes sense. It’s a pretty cool story—provided it was true.

But it’s not.

As Swift confirms in the above comments, they were already a couple by the time she attended that game, having been hanging out for a while. This lines up with all the July 2023 back-and-forth that ran rampant at the time. It also makes even more sense when you really think about it. A relationship this high-profile was bound to make waves. There’s no way you soft-launch it to the public without thoroughly exploring compatibility beforehand.

And the rest, as we know now, is history.
