New York Fashion Week’s September 2026 edition ran from Thursday 10 to Tuesday 15 September, presenting Spring/Summer 2027 collections and opening the international season ahead of London, Milan and Paris. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), which compiles the official schedule, listed around 70 runway shows and designer presentations, with further collections shown by appointment and digitally.

Dates and the shape of the week

The official calendar opened on 10 September with Henry Zankov’s debut as artistic director of Diane von Furstenberg and closed on 15 September with Thom Browne. Friday’s programme began at 10am out of respect for the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Several major names showed the day before the official week began. On 9 September, Ralph Lauren, Coach, Rachel Comey (marking 25 years of her label), Cult Gaia, J. Press and Libertine all presented collections.

The season also brought a policy change: the CFDA’s new fur-free rule applies to every designer on the official schedule.

A new chapter at Diane von Furstenberg

Zankov’s opening show carried particular weight. He was announced as the first artistic director of Diane von Furstenberg, a house long defined by its founder and the wrap dress she introduced in the 1970s. Zankov, who launched his own label in 2020, is known for colourful, texture-led knitwear and confident pattern mixing, so his first full runway collection for DVF was one of the most closely watched debuts of the season.

Designers on the schedule

The CFDA’s preliminary schedule combined long-established American houses with younger labels. Names confirmed for the season included:

  • Altuzarra
  • Anna Sui
  • Area
  • Calvin Klein Collection
  • Carolina Herrera
  • Christian Siriano
  • Khaite
  • Michael Kors Collection
  • Proenza Schouler
  • Tory Burch

Three brands returned to the week after time away: Monse, threeASFOUR and Tommy Hilfiger.

New to the official calendar

Ten designers made their debut on the official schedule, among them Benjamin Seidler, Conner Ives, Magda Butrym, Patrick Taylor, Zaldy and Sabyasachi. The Kolkata-based designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is best known for bridal wear and richly embellished Indian craftsmanship, and his presence on the New York schedule was one of the more unexpected additions of the season.

Emerging talent also came through the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Bad Binch TongTong and Jamie Haller, both first-time finalists, joined the calendar, alongside returning finalists including Aisling Camps and Amir Taghi.

What to look for in Spring/Summer 2027

New York designers have long been associated with clothes built for real lives rather than purely for the runway, and that practical streak tends to shape the season. Tailoring is a constant: jackets, trousers and polished separates that can be adjusted in proportion, weight or colour to feel new. Spring collections also bring lighter fabrics, easy dresses and layering pieces, and give designers room to work with colour, from soft pastels to bolder combinations.

Accessories deserve attention too. Bags, shoes, jewellery and eyewear often move from runway to street style faster than the clothes themselves, and the week’s street-style photography is frequently where the most wearable ideas first appear.

How the public could follow the shows

Most shows are invitation-only, but Rockefeller Center offered a free alternative. Its Fashion Week programming ran from 9 to 15 September, with runway livestreams shown on a large outdoor screen at The Rink, watch parties for selected shows, and brand activations including a Gap pop-up in the Channel Gardens from 11 to 13 September. No ticket or invitation was needed.

For anyone outside New York, runway images, backstage photography and reviews from fashion publications and brand channels made it possible to follow the collections almost in real time.

Why the week still matters

New York Fashion Week remains a commercial meeting point as much as a creative one: buyers, retailers, editors and stylists gather to see collections before they reach stores. For smaller labels, a slot on the official calendar brings press attention and industry contacts that are hard to secure otherwise. With a new creative director at one of its best-known houses, several high-profile returns and a fresh group of debut designers, the September 2026 season showed a calendar that is still evolving.
