Many people underestimate the potential of journaling in terms of how much it can do for us when we want to explore ourselves. However, we rarely recognize where to begin and what to write. While you try different activities, be sure to dedicate at least five minutes a day to recording them in your journal. 

It will be strange. If you have ever tried to start a diary, you probably already know that most of us tend to write for only a few weeks and then forget we ever did it. Do the Unexpected

We all have behavioral patterns that have become so ingrained that trying to break them in familiar environments can be challenging. So instead, do something unexpected. 

Don’t push yourself to do an activity you’d hate, but try to imagine a place or activity that you have never considered. Anything will work: a trip to a different city where no one knows you, going on a flash dancing session, or asking for a meal you’ve never tried before. 

Observe yourself as you go through this moment. The freedom to do anything, without something already pre-learned in your brain, can reveal some amazing insights about your authentic self. Experiment. Then, journal about it.

Mindfulness is the sense of being in the moment, in your mind and your body. It has become a buzzword, but at its core, it’s a great concept that strips away all the false layers from us. We can achieve mindfulness through meditation or brief body scans. 

Meditation allows us to sit with our thoughts and observe them before they hide or overtake our emotions. Sit or lie down in a quiet spot and slowly move your attention to your breathing and the feeling of your body. As you do, you will notice thoughts emerging — don’t judge yourself or these thoughts. Just look at them, as if they are clouds passing by, and let them go. 

Body scans are somewhat similar, but they teach us to identify different things in our bodies and try to understand their origins. Lie down and slowly ground yourself in that place. After that, start from your feet: Are there any sensations? Warmth, tickling? Tension? Observe, rather than trying to fix. Move upward and continue this activity on all parts of your body. As you reach your head, finish with a quick full-body scan. How do you feel? 

These activities often indicate that something is bothering us. Perhaps it’s a need that we didn’t think of or a discomfort we attempted to ignore.

Ask Those You Trust

Pick a person who will not judge you or try to make you appear as someone else. Ask them when, in their opinion, you were the most like yourself or when something in your behavior surprised them. Perhaps you didn’t know that you have a strong sense of justice. Or maybe you didn’t notice that being in some situations stresses you out. 

Don’t take all that others say at face value, but note these experiences about you and consider whether these new perspectives ring true.
